The Osun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has dismissed claims that the damaged section of the newly commissioned LAMECO Flyover in Osogbo indicates structural failure, insisting that the incident falls within the defect liability period covered by the contractor and should not undermine public confidence in the bridge.
The ministry made the clarification during a meeting with officials of the World Institute for Peace and Media at its headquarters in Abere. The engagement followed a recent protest by the civil society organisation and concerned residents demanding a thorough investigation into the damaged portion of the flyover.
Executive Director of the World Institute for Peace and Media, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, said the organisation requested the meeting to obtain official explanations on the project and to assure the public that its earlier protest was driven by public interest rather than political considerations.
According to him, the organisation sought clarification on the contractors handling the project, the quality assurance mechanisms adopted by the government and the procedures followed in awarding major infrastructure contract
The Permanent Secretary disclosed that he had served under five Osun State governors—Chief Bisi Akande, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Adegboyega Oyetola and Governor Ademola Adeleke—adding that engineering supervision has remained professional regardless of political leadership
He listed major projects supervised by the ministry over the years, including the State Secretariat, Old Garage–Abere–Akoda Dual Carriageway, Aregbe Bridge, Gbongan Interchange, Olaiya Flyover, as well as the Okefia, LAMECO and Lagere flyovers
Addressing concerns over the damaged section of the LAMECO Flyover, Bello explained that every government construction contract contains a defect liability period during which contractors are legally responsible for correcting any defects discovered after completion
